Breakfast With Santa
Saturday, December 10, 2011 For the first time St. Nicolas spent a wonderful morning with the children and grandchildren of the Hamlin Fire Department and the Exempts. Every child had unlimited "Santa seat" time and a special gift just for them. A delicious bacon, eggs and pancake breakfast was then served. The event was the work of many members but Heather and John Calaci, Karen Sabourin and Robbie Woods were the "elves in charge". The smiles on everyones face in the pictures and movies are testament to how successful this was.Photo's Tom MaierMovie and story by John Deserto

Wednesday, November 2, 2011 Hamlin Engine 55 ClubOctober 23, 2011 – 13:00 HoursEngine 55 Pump TestOld Engine 55, Hamlin’s 1931 Ward LaFrance, responded to the Erie Canal yesterday for her first pump test since 1962 when she last passed underwriter certification. Participating in the test were several Hamlin Firefighters and Hamlin Exempt Club Members. Assisting in the pump operations were the world renown, water pumping consultants, Bob and Jim Kurycki, arriving in their 1942 Chevrolet Buffalo water pumping service rig.It was touch and go for a while as it was first discovered that “Old Bertha’s” tank dump lines were full of sediment and it was not possible to flood the pump with water to assist in achieving draft with the old Northern gear pump. Water to the pump was then supplied by Kurycki’s Chevy Buffalo, and with the help of some heavy oil being introduced through the priming pump, a draft was achieved and a mighty stream was played out over the canal. It was a great day with a successful pumping operation, hots, beer and pop and lots of fun. “Old Bertha, once Engine 55, and once Engine 245,” is now more than just a pretty antique, she is a working machine! Several firefighters exclaimed that the old engine should be put back in service so that they too could respond to a working fire the way it was done many years ago. Sunday, October 23, 2011 At 5PM on Sunday, October 16 the Hamlin Fire Department was alerted to a barn fire on Lake Road East Fork. A passing Park Police Officer noticed the smoke and flames on his way past the century old barn and called in the location with the note that is was quickly spreading.Hamlin engine 243 responded with a crew of 8 and acted as the base pumper for the call. 2C-34 was command and initiated a blitz attack. Engine 242 was close behind 243 and both engines put 3 inch blitz fire lines into operation immediately. This darkened the bulk of the fire and the crew of 243 advanced an attack line into the front door to hit the few remaining hot spots. The crew of 242 searched the second floor of fire extension. Hamlin Heavy Rescue 248 provided manpower and lighting.Walker engine 282 was automatically dispatched in a mutual assist crew and provided manpower during the overhaul. Hilton Rescue 268 was also automatically dispatched as the RIC. Hilton also provided Quint 260 as a protection in case the quick blitz attack was not successful, but it was not needed. Morton’s engine 215 also provided manpower. Brockport filled in at Hamlin, Spencerport filled in at Hilton. Hamlin Volunteer Ambulance provided rehab. The damage to the barn was minimal due to the sharp eye of the Park Policeman which allowed the fire department to jump on the fire very hard with the blitz attack very quickly and aggressively.Click on any photo to see the whole story.Story by John DesertoPhoto’s by Jerry Clement

Sunday, October 16, 2011 A great big thank you to the 200 plus people who braved the poor weather and joined us Saturday for our open house. We racked up 114 miles on the fire trucks giving rides and everyone had a great time. We couldn’t burn the prop rooms like we had planned due to the high winds. We hope to burn them as part of our normal Tuesday night drill and everyone is invited to attend that.We hope to see everyone next year for our 2012 open house, hope we have better weather.Photo’s by Tom Maier and Jerry ClementStory by John Deserto
Joey is a resident of Hamlin who someday wants to become a firefighter. His parents contacted the fire department to see if we could do something special for him on his birthday. Hamlin Chief Allen Smith jumped at the opportunity. So we brought Joey his birthday cake in our engine 243 and several firefighters were on hand to help out. The highlight was a ride on the firetruck for Joey and his friends. Everyone had a good time.Mom sent the following picture with Joey in the chiefs white hat and friends Andrew, Jacob, Olivia and Cayden. The other photo's are from Jerry Clement
