Thursday, May 2, 2013 April 28 was another busy Sunday afternoon for the Hamlin-Morton-Walker Fire District. At about 1PM station 3 (Morton Fire Department) was requested into Kendall, Orleans County for a reported barn fire on Transit Road. They responded with tanker-engine 2436 which became the base pumper on the “Roosevelt Highway” sector. The Heavy Rescue from Station 1 responded with manpower. Soon after the Kendall Chief requested an engine and a tanker from station 1. Tanker 246 and Engine 2413 responded. Engine 2413 replaced 2436 as the base pumper when it arrived. Three 3 inch lines were laid to the very large and fully involved barn from 2413 while it was being fed from a single, then an additional, three inch supply line from the tanker relay. Tankers involved in the relay were from Hamlin (station 1 - 246, station 3 – 2436), Brockport, Carlton, Kendall and Lyndonville. The blaze did extended to adjoining structures, a vehicle and started a brush fire. A nearby structure did contain dynamite, which was protected during the fire. The Monroe County Bomb Squad disposed of the dynamite after the fire. While the barn fire was going on Hamlin was called to a brush fire on Lawrence Road. Spencerport Engine 2914, which was filling in at station 1, responded to this call with Bergen Engine 27. Lines were stretched from the Spencerport Engine and firefighters descended into a gully to control the difficult fire. Leaves and brush had been deposited into the gully by the homeowner. A supply line was stretched from the Bergen Engine for additional water supply. Station 1’s Brush Truck, 247, was called and was used to stop the spread of the fire as it was beginning to extend beyond the length of the stretched lines. This was not a big fire, but one with an unusual response. The only truck that didn’t move from Station 1 was Engine 2412. Story and photo’s from Jerry Clement
Sunday, February 10, 2013 January 28, 2013 – 9:00 PM, 2668 Brick Schoolhouse Road The Walker Fire Department was dispatched to a house on fire reported to 911 by a neighbor. Firefighters arrived to find fire burning up the side of the structure along an outside masonry chimney. 2C18 assumed command and operations was assigned to 2C14. Engine 284 arrived and located in the driveway. A hand line was taken to a side door and Walker firefighters entered the first floor, advanced to a wood stove and extinguished visible fire. Hamlin dispatched Engine 243 with Lt. Doerrer, EMS Captain Anthony DiNatale driving and firefighters Adam Barker, Justin Stevenson, Jeff Thompson and John Deserto in the load. On arrival Lt. Doerrer and firefighter Thomson took a second line to the second floor, firefighter Stevenson and Capt. DiNatale hooked a 4 inch supply line to Engine 284 and firefighters Barker and Deserto overhauled the area around the wood stove on the first floor looking for extension. The fire had extended into the walls around the first floor chimney and was working up into the ceiling on the first floor. This was quickly extinguished once it was opened up. The fire had not extended upward past the second floor. There was however, there was considerable damage in the first floor living room area, but salvage operations saved many of the antiques, furniture and photo’s. Walker’s Engine 282 and Squad 2818 also responded to the scene. Upon declaring a working fire, 2C18 requested a Hilton crew to the scene as the R.I.T. assignment and special called Hamlin’s tanker 246 as a secondary water supply. Later Morton’s Rescue 218 was called to respond non-emergency and filled air tanks from their on-board cascade system. Smoke detectors did alert the home owner of the fire who was able to exit the structure with no need for medical attention. Click on any of the photos to view the entire story. Wednesday, January 30, 2013 January 26, 2013 – 2:00 PMThe Hamlin Fire Department was dispatched to a snowmobile accident approximately ½ mile from the roadway with a reported unconscious male at the accident site. Hamlin’s Rescue 248, Squad 2418 and Engine 242 responded under command of 2C14 who requested off road vehicles from the Walker and Hilton Fire Districts. Snowmobilers who met firefighters at the roadway took a Hamlin EMT and a Monroe EMT back to the scene of the injury to begin patient care. The Walker ATV and Hilton ATV moved to the scene and Walker brought the patient to the roadway and Hilton brought the firefighters and EMT personnel back out to the roadway. Saturday, January 26, 2013 The Hamlin Fire Department has been dispatched to a few MVA's so far this year. One January 3 the department responded to a one car accident.On January 14 the department was alerted to an MVA, car into the house. The vehicle failed to stop at the intersection, hit a berm and went airborne for 20 feet before landing and striking the front of a house.The photo's were provided by Jerry Clement.
Thursday, January 3, 2013 The senseless tragedy in West Webster on Christmas Eve, 2012 had a profound impact on the members of the Hamlin Fire Department. Members were in and out of the fire house all day Christmas Eve looking for updates and watching the news. Early in the afternoon Chief Allen Smith was contacted for a rescue company to fill in at West Webster on Christmas morning. A crew of six was gathered in a few minutes. Hamlin’s Heavy Rescue 248 with a crew of Chief Allen Smith, Lt. Pat Doerrer, driver Daryl Prince and firefighters Hannah Deserto, Tom Sercu, Mike Lapinski and John Deserto arrived at West Webster Station 1 at 6 AM Christmas Day. Companies from Spencerport, Hilton and Honeoye Falls were also there supporting our West Webster brothers. Hamlin ran 3 EMS jobs with the ambulance during our 6 hour shift. During that time the Hamlin crew witnessed some of the most beautiful acts of kindness that they could remember. The outpouring from the Webster community was overwhelming. Inside the fire house the memorial on Tomasz’ car was just beginning and the chalkboard by the front door was filled with the names of all the departments that had filled in over the last 24 hours. Several members felt that that time at West Webster really helped their own emotional turmoil over this event. We realized that the time spent with our own families on our belated Christmas was even more precious. The wake for Chief Chiaperini and Firefighter Kaczowka on Saturday was another emotional day. The staggering number of firefighters was completely awe-inspiring. Sixteen members of the Hamlin Fire Department joined about three hundred members of Monroe Counties Second Battalion and proudly waited three to four hours to pay their respects to the Chiaperini and Kaczowka families. On Sunday, the crew that had been planning to cook a dinner at the Ronald McDonald House were able to leave Hamlin early and salute the funeral procession as it past the West Webster Station number 1. Another moving moment was when Chief Chiaperini past his firehouse for the final time. When the Hamlin cooking crew of Deputy Chief Mike Gross and his wife Cathy, EMS Capt. Anthony DiNatale and firefighters Kelly and Tim Slossar and John Deserto arrived at the Ronald MacDonald house later that day the volunteers there were surprised that they could make it. Little did they know of the quiet determination of Hamlin firefighter Kelly Slossar who was determined that a dinner would be waiting those families staying that night. Ronald McDonald House volunteer Nancy Allison Becker posted the following on the Prayers and Support for Webster Firefighters Facebook page, “I want to give a HUGE shout out for the Hamlin fire department. They are here at the Rochester Ronald McDonald House preparing dinner for our families that are staying here while they have a child in the hospital. Their generosity knows no limits. They came here directly from the fallen fire fighters funeral in Webster. May God bless them all. THANK YOU! ♥ #WWFD” The comment had over 500 “likes” an hour or two later and many comments. On Monday, New Years Eve, Hamlin sent an engine company to Webster Station 1 so they could attend the funeral of firefighter Tomasz Kaczowka. Engine 242 with Chief Allen Smith, Lt. A Deserto, driver Anthony DiNatale and firefighters Kelly Slossar, Tom Sercu, Scott Prince and John Deserto took a single call during their tour from 6 AM to 3 PM. The Hamlin company was joined by an engine from Rush and a ladder from East Rochester. The Hamlin Fire Department was honored to be able to help our neighbors in West Webster during this horrible time. We will always be ready to do whatever needed by our First Battalion Brothers. In conclusion, Hamlin Chief Allen Smith sent the following out to the department, “We should all be extremely proud of what we were able to accomplish this week in support of West Webster. The willingness of personnel to put West Webster's needs ahead of their own is incredible. Thank you all for what you do. Thursday, December 20, 2012 The Brockport Fire Department was dispatched to a reported dryer fire just after noon on December 20th. 2C13 requested Engine 234 to locate to the rear and confirmed smoke and flames were showing. A line was stretched and the fire quickly contained. Hamlin Engine 243 arrived second-on-scene and located on Main Street. The Hamlin crew assisted the Brockport crew with ventilation. Both crews were quickly placed back in service as there was no extension from the fire in the dryer. The fire started when a crew from Monroe was drying towels in a dryer and the towels caught fire. Thursday, December 13, 2012 The 9th Annual Santa Run took place under rainy skies on Saturday, December 8. The members of the Hamlin and Walker Fire Departments and SANTA himself delivered gifts and Christmas dinners to thirty three families in Hamlin and Clarkson. As always the real work was done by the people at Life Solutions of Hamlin who gathered and organized all the food and presents.As always the faces of the children made this activity one of the most popular in the fire house. Big thank You to all the kids who's eyes light up when Santa shows up at their door.The movie is from the deliveries that Hamlin Engine 243 did. Sunday, December 2, 2012 Firefighters spent many hours Sunday decorating Engine 242 for the Holiday Parade of Lights in Brockport. Special thanks to those who attended and spent the time decorating the truck. While at the parade firefighters handed out candy canes to many children. Fun was had by all and ideas are already being thrown around for next year.
Sunday, December 2, 2012 The driver of a pick-up truck lost control of the vehicle and slammed into a tree on Morton Road. The impact bent the truck around the tree and the trunk of the tree ended-up in the passenger compartment. The driver was alert but trapped in the vehicle. 2C11, 2C21 and 2C31 along with 2C14 were quickly on scene as was Morton’s Rescue 218 and Engine 215 and Hamlin’s 248. Extrication tools were employed from both rescues to remove the doors of the vehicle and to expand the opening of the door area to allow victim removal. November 24 MVA
Wednesday, November 28, 2012 On Saturday, November 24 lake effect snows made driving slick. One driver lost control of his vehicle on Route 18 near Hamlin Center Road and ended up on his roof. Hamlin EMS Squad 2418 and Rescue-Engine 242 responded with a Monroe Ambulance. The driver self-extricated and was unhurt. Movie and story by John Deserto
